The earth has an abundance of water, but unfortunately, only a small percentage (about 0.3 percent), is even usable by humans. The other 99.7 percent is in the oceans, soils, icecaps, and floating in the atmosphere. Still, much of the 0.3 percent that is useable is unattainable. Every day, the population beings to increase, making the already limited amount of water much less. In order to save our future of water preservation, we must learn to conserve what limited resources we have.

Here are the reasons why saving water is important:

  1. Endless uses: We use water every day of our lives. It is required in almost everything we do. We need water for drinking, bathing, cooking, washing, and other countless activities.
  2. Water grows food: Fruits and vegetables, as well as other produce, require water to grow.
  3. Ecosystem and wildlife: Humans, animals, trees’ full ecosystems depend on water. In fact, every species on this planet needs water to live and survive. Without water, aquatic life will stand no chance of survival.
  4. Saves energy: Pumping water from the central facility requires high amounts of energy to run the equipment. Studies show, that in California, almost 7% of the energy that is consumed goes towards transferring water.

So what process do we need to follow to save water?

  1. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
  2. Only run the washing machine and dishwasher when you have a full load.
  3. Use a low-flow showerhead and faucet aerators.
  4. Install a dual flush or low flow toilet or put a conversion kit on your existing toilet.
  5. Don’t overwater your lawn or water during peak periods, and install rain sensors on irrigation systems.
  6. Install a rain barrel for outdoor watering.
  7. Share your knowledge about saving water through conservation and efficiency with your neighbors.
